100,000 Posts on Museum Blogs

Back in May of 2006, we launched Museum Blogs (www.museumblogs.org) as an experimental site and to “help increase the community’s awareness and authority.” By authority we meant search rankings and Technorati ranking in particular. By aggregating all of the collective feeds the site has created additional links to all the museum blogs in the directory. When the site launched there were only around 50 museum blogs and now two years later there are nearly 300 in listed in…

Museums and the Web 2008, Montréal

The full program for the Museums and the Web 2008 conference is now available on their Website. For the first time in a couple of years, Ideum will be in the exhibit hall. Our exhibitor information can be found here. Along with exhibiting, I’ll be offering two half-day workshops at the conference. Rather than repeat last year’s workshops (Museum Mashups and Real Science 2.0), I decided to explore some new topics this year. We’ll be exploring the future of Web video…

A Museum Dashboard

I just read a post from MuseumLab blog which directed to me to the Dashboard on the newly redesigned Indianapolis Museum of Art website. The concept of a “Dashboard” isn’t new, in fact there is even a book on Dashboard Design, but this the first time I’ve come across a dashboard in the museum world, and I have to say it is pretty interesting. A combination of Web statistics, visitor and collections information, and even a monthly average of…

Cultural Connections, WMA, and ASTC

Tomorrow, I am making a presentation at the Oakland Museum for Cultural Connections. The topic for the event is Technology: Connecting online and in-gallery experiences. This event is a precursor to the Western Museums Association (WMA) Annual Conference, which starts on Thursday. At WMA, I’m participating in a session entitled “An Eye on Design,” which explores preconceptions about museum design. I will be focusing on technology (of course!) and how it affects visitor experiences. The image on the left was one I…

Review of Old Masters Picture Gallery in Second Life

I just posted a review of the Second Life version of the City of Dresden’s Old Masters Picture Gallery on the ExhibitFiles site. Touring this formal museum space was an interesting experience, made even more so given my company. My good friend and Second Life artist, DanCoyote, was kind enough to show me around and share his insights about this virtual world. Following our trip to the virtual Picture Gallery, we toured DanCoyote’s latest installation, Full…

Slave Narratives interactive is a Flashforward Finalist

The Slave Narratives online exhibit which we developed with the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) is a finalist in the Flashforward Film Festival (see the “Experience” category). The winners will be announced at Flashforward 2007, a three-day conference “led by the world’s leading Flash designers and developers.” You can vote for Slave Narratives for the “People’s Choice” award on their site. There’s more about the Slave Narratives exhibit in the Ideum portfolio.

Feedburner Blogs About Museums

A number of museum blogs are mentioned in the latest post on Burning Questions: The official FeedBurner weblog. Entitled, Jackson Pollock didn’t bother with a “Troubleshootize” tab, the post focuses mostly on art museum blogs and podcasts, but it was nice to see a mention of the museum blog survey that I conducted with Seb Chan at the Powerhouse Museum. He has more on the FeedBurner post on fresh + new blog. FeedBurner for those of you who might…

152 Museum Blogs, 20,000 Posts

The museum blogosphere is growing at a furious pace. In the first four months of the year, we saw 57 blogs added to the Museum Blogs directory. We’ve now surpassed 150 blogs and an astounding 20,000 aggregated posts on the site. Just last month, when Seb Chan and myself presented, Radical Trust: The State of the Museum Blogosphere at the Museums and Web conference in San Francisco there were 139 blogs. Today, about three weeks later 13 more have appeared. Having just delivered…

Radical Trust: Presentation and Blogger Meet Up

Yesterday, Seb Chan from Powerhouse Museum and I presented our paper, Radical Trust: The State of the Museum Blogosphere at the Museums and the Web conference. Following the presentation we had a lunchtime meet up and discussion about the future of museums and blogging. It was nice meet many of the folks beyond the blogs that I’m so familiar with. Here’s a round up of resources and posts from the session. Radical Trust: The State of the Museum Blogosphere (the paper on the MW…
